Tradition Meets Future: How an Old Technology Is Shaping the Energy Transition

For more than 30 years, Alumina Systems GmbH has been manufacturing ceramic housings for high-performance thyristors in close partnership with ABB (now Hitachi Energy). They were used to safely convert alternating current to direct current – a process that allowed electrical energy to be transmitted over long distances with minimal losses. Chinese manufacturers have since copied this technology. Due to government subsidies, other manufacturers are no longer competitive.

Technological Comeback for the Energy Transition

With the triumph of renewable energies, this technology is experiencing an impressive comeback worldwide: Wind turbines and large solar plants also need to safely switch high currents and voltages. Hitachi Energy’s high-performance thyristors with ceramic housings from Alumina Systems are ideal for this.

But requirements have increased. And so has competition – especially from Asia. Alumina Systems is the global quality leader in ceramic thyristor housings. Currently,
